Melbourne Steam Traction Engine Club is Melbournes premier vintage machinery museum with a comprehensive collection of vintage machinery from a bygone era.
Melbourne Steam Traction Engine Club’s goal is to acquire, preserve, conserve, restore, exhibit and operate industrial and agricultural equipment of a by-gone era. The museum’s collection consists of steam powered road and rail vehicles, steam traction engines, road rollers, other steam vehicles and engines, and internal combustion machinery.
The Melbourne Steam Traction Engine Club has been an important part of the preservation and restoration of Australia’s industrial and agricultural heritage since the 1963. The Melbourne Steam Traction Engine Club started with small displays at the Royal Melbourne Show, then soon after running our own Rallies at Wantirna. As the Club’s collection grew, more permanent grounds were required. In 1986, the Club moved to its present location in Scoresby where the current museum and National Steam Centre has been established.
Our club has around 170 members and has occupied the current pleasant parklands at 1200 Ferntree Gully Road for over 20 years. Our museum has grown to contain over 500 historic and significant objects, most of which have a well-researched provenance. The Melbourne Steam Traction Engine Club emphasises keeping exhibits in operating condition for our visitors, and maintaining the skills required to keep this historical machinery running. We maintain toilets picnic tables, shade trees and BBQ facilities on site for use by our visitors. The museum is open each weekend.
As the Melbourne Steam Traction Engine Club has grown, it provides a vital and strong link to Victoria’s and Australia’s engineering and agricultural heritage now and into the future. The National Steam Centre has become a spectacular asset for the Scoresby District and provides important hands-on access to Victoria’s engineering heritage to the local community and beyond.
The Melbourne Steam Traction Engine Club was recently awarded an Engineering Heritage Significance plaque recognising our special collection. This was awarded at our 50th birthday celebrations
